France vs Belgium Player Ratings as Les Bleus advance to Euro 2024 quarter-final
Belgium managed to keep up with France for most of the time in the game, but Jan Vertonghen’s own-goal is what set both teams apart as France beat Belgium to qualify for the quarter-final of Euro 2024.
Both teams went toe-to-toe in every aspect, and as such, couldn’t manage to convert a number of chances. The nightmare for Belgium came when Vertonghen was trying to defend Randal Kolo Muani’s attempt. The latter fired a shot, but the ball deflected into Vertonghen and was diverted into Belgium’s net for an own-goal. Les Bleus then closed out the game and qualified for the last-8!
Here’s a look at France vs Belgium Player Ratings!

Mike Maignan (6.7/10)
Produced two great stops from Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne respectively!
Defenders
Jules Koundé (7.2/10)
Made several attempts to help France take a lead and was their best defender for large parts of the game!
Dayot Upamecano (6.8/10)
Upamecano tried his best to defend the box, and came up with some physical tackles that kept Belgian players at bay.
William Saliba (6.8/10)
Saliba has been very impressive at Euro 2024, and he showcased his class in keeping Romelu Lukaku at arm’s length throughout this game!
Theo Hernández (7.1/10)
Magnificent challenge to deny Yannick Carrasco in the second half.
Midfielders
Aurélien Tchouaméni (6.5/10)
Was booked early, but managed to keep his composure whenever Belgium built attacks from midfield. Kept France ticking with his quick passing.
N’Golo Kanté (7.1/10)
Connected very well with Antoine Griezmann as well as Jules Kounde. France’s best midfielder on the pitch!
Adrien Rabiot (5/10)
Was booked very early in the game and will miss the quarter-final.
Forwards
Antoine Griezmann (6.5/10)
Should be playing more centrally, but is continuously being played on the right by Didier Deschamps. Wasn’t as effective as he can be.
Kylian Mbappé (6.5/10)
The Real Madrid superstar had a tough time and even though he showcased bursts of pace from time to time, he struggled to test the Belgian goalkeeper often.
Marcus Thuram (5.5/10)
Should have done better with the chances he received, especially the one via a cross from Jules Kounde in the first half.
Substitutions
Randal Kolo Muani (7/10)
Talk about instant impact as he forced Belgium into making an error and scoring an own goal!
Manager
Didier Deschamps (6.5/10)
Thanks to Jan Vertonghen’s own-goal, his team progressed to the quarter-final. Most of the points here for Deschamps are solely due to his substitution of Kolo Muani!

Goalkeeper
Koen Casteels (6.5/10)
Made two crucial saves. Couldn’t do much for the own-goal scored by Jan Vertonghen!
Defenders
Arthur Theate (6.5/10)
As the game went into the crucial stages, Theate performed well for Belgium as he blocked multiple shots on Belgium’s goal.
Jan Vertonghen (6.7/10)
Give Marcus Thuram a hard-time and managed the rest of his defensive duties well. Unfortunate for the own-goal!
Wout Faes (6.7/10)
Defended very well in his area against Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann!
Timothy Castagne (6.7/10)
Provided important link-ups with Kevin De Bruyne and created spaces for his teammates to break in.
Midfielders
Kevin De Bruyne (6.5/10)
Not his best performance as he played in a much more deeper role, which meant Belgium’s attacks came from the flank for most of the time in the game.
Amadou Onana (7/10)
Did everything to disrupt the way France were trying to play with his tidy challenges and physicality.
Yannick Carrasco (5.5/10)
Made several attempts to break the deadlock, but his efforts were always denied by the French.
Jérémy Doku (6/10)
Caused trouble for the French every time he moved with ball on his feet, but that’s literally all he has done in every Euro 2024 game up till now, without an end product.
Forwards
Loïs Openda (5/10)
Worked hard, but wasn’t effective as Belgium sat deep, looking to counter France, which didn’t happen much.
Romelu Lukaku (5/10)
Struggled despite having a strike partner with him. Looked more comfortable when Openda was substituted.
Substitutions
Orel Mangala (6.5/10)
Was brought on to free De Bruyne from playing a deeper role. Did his job quite well.
Charles De Ketelaere (N/A)
Didn’t get much time to have any kind of impact as he was brought on in the 88th minute.
Dodi Lukebakio (N/A)
Didn’t get much time to have any kind of impact as he was brought on in the 88th minute.
Manager
Domenico Tedesco (6.6/10)
An unfortunate exit for the manager and his team, but it was deserved considering how Belgium played throughout Euro 2024.
