France Sets Unusual Record in Euro 2024 Despite Mbappe Injury

Les Bleus Make History Without Scoring

France have set a remarkable record at Euro 2024 becoming the first team in World Cup or European Championship history to advance to the knockout stages without any of their players scoring a goal. This unusual achievement comes as Didier Deschamps’ side prepares for their knockout stages after defeating Poland.

France’s journey to the last-16 has been unique. Their opening match against Austria ended in a 1-0 victory thanks to an own goal by Maximilian Wober.

In their second game, France played to a 0-0 draw against the Netherlands securing four points from two matches—enough to guarantee their progression to the knockout stages.

But Mbappe did score against Poland in their final group game and too was from a spot-kick. So France are yet to find the back of the net from an open play as they end their group stage with 5 points on the 2nd spot with Austria topping the group unexpectedly.

Mbappe’s Injury Troubles

One of the world’s top strikers Kylian Mbappe has had a challenging tournament due to injury. The soon-to-be Real Madrid star suffered a broken nose during the match against Austria forcing him to sit out the subsequent draw with the Netherlands. Despite his absence, France managed to secure the points needed to advance.

Mbappe made his return in a behind-closed-doors friendly and also started in a match against Poland in France’s final group game. With Mbappe back in the lineup France finally found a goal by one of their own players boosting their confidence for the knockout rounds.

But don’t forget that they have yet to score a goal from an open play.
