Szoboszlai Calls for UEFA Protocol Change After Varga Injury
Hungarian Star Criticizes Slow Medical Response
During Hungary’s Euro 2024 match against Scotland, a severe injury to Barnabas Varga led to calls for UEFA to change its medical protocols. The incident occurred when Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn leaving the Hungarian striker motionless on the field.
Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was quick to voice his dissatisfaction with the slow response from the medical staff.
“I don’t really know what the protocol is… if our doctor says we need to go on immediately to help, then I don’t think they should walk,” he said, emphasizing the need for a faster response to such serious injuries.
Medical Procedures Under Scrutiny
After the collision players from both teams urgently signaled for medical assistance and Varga was eventually shielded from view by sheets as he was treated and stretchered off. The game was paused for about seven minutes highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Despite the criticism, UEFA defended its actions. In a statement, they claimed,
“The intervention of the team doctor happened within 15 seconds of the incident… everything was done in accordance with the applicable medical procedures. There was no delay in the treatment of and assistance to the player.”
Varga is now in stable condition but will require surgery for a facial fracture ruling him out for the rest of Euro 2024.

Hungary Secures Vital Win Amid Controversy
Despite the unsettling incident Hungary managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Scotland thanks to a late goal by Kevin Csoboth in the tenth minute of added time. This crucial win keeps Hungary’s hopes alive for advancing to the knockout stages as one of the best third-place finishers.
However, for Scotland the defeat marks the end of their Euro 2024 journey, extending their long wait for a knockout game at a major tournament. The Tartan Army will have to wait longer for another chance to see their team progress beyond the group stages.
The calls for a review of medical protocols following Varga’s injury highlight an ongoing debate about player safety and the efficiency of emergency responses in football. As the tournament continues many will be watching to see if UEFA makes any changes in light of this incident.
