Florian Wirtz Biography – Age, Net worth, height
Florian Wirtz of Germany and Bayer Leverkusen has established himself as one of the best young players in world football. He made a great start to the 2024/25 Bundesliga season with a brace against Borussia Monchengladbach. Let us learn some more about him.
Florian Wirtz Early life
Wirtz was born in the Brauweiler district of Pulheim, North Rhine-Westphalia. He played for local club Grün-Weiß Brauweiler from 2008 to 2010, receiving his formative learning of football there before moving to FC Koln in 2010. He would be a part of the Koln academy for 10 years.
Florian Wirtz Family
Florian Wirtz comes from a footballing family. Wirtz’s parents also act as his agents. His father Hans-Joachim is also the chairman of Grün-Weiß Brauweiler, the club that Wirtz played for as a child, before he joined Koln. His elder sister Juliane Wirtz is a professional footballer as well, playing as a midfielder for Frauen-Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. She made her Frauen-Bundesliga debut at the age of sixteen and also has represented Germany at youth level.
Florian Wirtz Playing style
Wirtz is an attacking midfielder by trade, a pure form of what had become a lost art of a position. He is right footed and has primarily played for Leverkusen as the left sided number 10 in a 3-4-2-1, or as the sole attacking midfielder in a 3-4-1-2. He is one of the most technically gifted players in the Bundesliga and mostly operates from the left half space. For this reason, he has also sometimes played as an inverted left winger.
Wirtz is great at recieving passes between the lines, turning with ease and then breaking the defence either with his brilliant passing or intelligent movement. One of the most creative players in the world, his passing is excellent and his ball carrying is also of a really high standard. As he has continued to develop, Wirtz has also added goals to his game and now is one of Leverkusen’s main goalscorers. He is very good out of possession too, covering a lot of ground every game.
Florian Wirtz Club career
Wirtz soon came to be regarded as one of the best young players in Germany while he still at Koln’s academy. He helped the club win the U17 Bundesliga title before in 2020, joining Bayer Leverkusen, amid interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. It caused controversy as Koln deemed that Leverkusen had broken a gentlemen’s agreement to not sign player’s from each other’s academies. Leverkusen however said that the signing was for their senior team so it wasn’t valid.
Either way, Wirtz soon made his way to the Bundesliga and his talent was clear for anyone to see. Over the next two years, he became one of the best young players in world football and clubs all around began taking notice. In 2022, however, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and missed almost a year of action. It is one of the worst injuries that can happen to a footballer.
But when he did ultimately return, Wirtz had somehow become even better. He had 36 goal contributions last season as Bayer Leverkusen went on to win the DFB Pokal and Bundesliga unbeaten and only lost the Europa League final.
Wirtz has become one of the best players in the world now and will almost certainly be on the Ballon D’or top 10.

Wirtz received his first international call up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in 2021. He debuted in September of that year in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, coming on as a substitute for Joshua Kimmich in a match Germany won 2-0.
In 2022 May, then Germany manager Hansi Flick expressed his willingness to include Wirtz in the World Cup squad but unfortunately the youngster missed out due to injuries. In March of this year, he scored his first international goal, seven seconds into a friendly match against France in a 2–0 victory, which is the second fastest goal in international football history.
Wirtz was called up to the Euro 2024 squad as it was expected. He was the first goalscorer of the tournament, scoring in a 5-1 win over Scotland. With that he became the youngest player to score in the Euros for Germany. He would also score a 89th minute equaliser to take the quarterfinal against Spain into extra time but the eventual champions knocked out the hosts with a goal late into the additional minutes.
