Everton open to offer Dele Alli a chance to revive his career

Ever since his incredible breakout season at Tottenham, a lot has been expected from Dele Alli but the now 27-year-old has struggled to live up to that potential. Once considered to be one of the best young players in the world, the English international has seen his stock drop rapidly over the last few years. Many hoped that a move to Everton would re-invigorate things for Alli but instead, the midfielder has made only 13 appearances for the club.

Even a loan move to Besiktas didn’t help his cause but a hip-injury, alongside several other injury set-backs, has meant that the 27-year-old hasn’t played a competitive game in a year.  Reports indicated, that the Toffees had hoped to have Alli back in March but another set-back in January changed his return timeline. However, with Alli out of contract at the end of the season, reports had indicated that his future may lie elsewhere but the Athletic has revealed otherwise.

Everton in talks with Tottenham over Alli extension

The news outlet have revealed that despite the 27-year-old’s injury issues and Everton’s convoluted agreement with Tottenham for Alli, they are willing to give him a contract extension. The Toffees signed Alli on a free-transfer but with various clauses worth a total of £40m for the midfielder. That includes a clause to pay the North Londoners £10m if Alli makes 20 appearances as well as a lump sum payment if he signs a new deal.

However, the Athletic have reported that the Goodison Park side are in talks with Tottenham to re-negotiate the clauses to offer Alli a new deal. This comes because the club lack depth in Alli’s attacking midfield position and are struggling to find the finances for it. The report has also indicated that Spurs are open to talks as they would earn nothing should Alli leave for free at the end of the season. Any new contract though will see the 27-year-old take a serious pay-cut on his current wage of around £100,000 per week.

But Alli is reportedly open to taking a pay cut as he wants to remain in the Premier League and has a good relationship with Everton boss Sean Dyche. The former Burnley boss has kept a close eye on the midfielder over the last year and reports indicate that Dyche believes Alli would fit perfectly in his system.
