Douglas Luiz explains Juventus move with a subtle dig at Aston Villa
Douglas Luiz has spoken up about his move to Italian giants Juventus while subtly taking aim at former employers Aston Villa. The Brazilian midfielder joined Juventus for around £42million earlier this summer – with Villa paying around £18.5m for two players, Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea, to come the other way.
Luiz had previously played a huge role as Aston Villa over-performed expectations to make the Champions League for the coming season. He started 35 of their Premier League games, scoring nine and assisting five.
When asked for his reasons for leaving Villa and the Premier League, Luiz said he was more concerned with the “size of the club” rather than what league he was playing in, insisting any player would want to play for a team as big as Juventus.
“Why did I leave the Premier League? Any player in the world would have wanted to have an experience at Juventus, I am no different,” he told Tuttosport. “It doesn’t depend so much on the championship, but rather on the size of the club. It’s a nice thing to be able to tell my family, once I retire, that I played for Juve.”
It is obviously quite a big blow for Unai Emery’s side. But they have done quite well to replace the Brazilian. They have signed the exceptional Amadou Onana from Everton while the aforementioned Barrenechea too looks like a really good prospect in midfield. Juventus on the other hand have paired Luiz up with another new signing in Khepren Thuram and are now looking to sign Teun Koopmeiners.
