De Gea dropped one game after Fiorentina return
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea had made a much anticipated return to football with Fiorentina midweek but found himself out of action again this weekend. The Spaniard had left United in the summer of 2023 and was without a club for over a year till Fiorentina signed him earlier this month.
Undoubtedly an United legend, De Gea was a divisive figure among the fanbase by the end of his time at the club. He won the Golden Glove in his last season at the Old Trafford but manager Erik Ten Hag chose to sign a better ball playing keeper in Andre Onana.
De Gea made his debut for La Viola as they drew 3-3 at home with Hungarian side Puskas Akademia in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off, a match they were heavy favourites to win. De Gea didn’t particularly do great, but none of the goals were down to him either.
However, he was dropped by Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino for the Italian side’s league clash with Venezia. Pietro Terracciano kept his place in the side after having started their league opener against Parma. He made 5 saves as the two sides drew 0-0.
De Gea would have hoped to make his Serie A debut in that game but that clearly wasn’t to be. The Conference League game was his first in 446 days. He will now be expected back in action midweek in the return leg against Puskas Akademia. Fiorentina have been the losing finalists in the last two editions of the competition.
