“I still can’t believe it”: David Beckham comments on Lionel Messi playing for Inter Miami
When rumours began to emerge that Lionel Messi was set to leave Paris Saint-Germain for a new club, many expected the Argentine to re-sign for Barcelona. But the La Liga side’s financial issues combined with other factors meant that Messi had several other European sides waiting. Yet despite that, the now 36-year-old opted to sign for Inter Miami in a move that shocked the world.
But Messi’s time with the MLS side has been nothing but sunny days as the Argentine has thrived in the MLS as in 27 appearances, he has scored 23 goals and 16 assists. It’s an incredible tally befitting of a player of Messi’s talent and the 36-year-old has especially thrived this season. He has contributed to 19 goals in just 10 league appearances, a tally that has shocked the MLS.
Beckham can’t believe that Messi is playing for Inter Miami
Yet the Argentine’s footballing prowess has come as little shock to many with those within the MLS only now discovering why the footballing star is so renowned. But at the same time, David Beckham is still in shock that Messi is in fact playing for Inter Miami. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star played a key role in bringing the Argentine over but still can’t believe.
He also admitted that he has never looked it as being Messi’s boss despite co-owning the MLS side Inter Miami and added that Messi’s mere presence at the club is surreal for everyone.
“I can’t look at it like that (being Messi’s boss), I can’t! I just can’t. It felt unbelievable [bringing Messi to Miami]. And I still can’t believe it. Every time someone turns around to me and says: ‘You have Messi on your team, you realize that, don’t you?,’ it really is surreal to say that we have probably the greatest player to have ever played the game, the most successful player to have ever played the game, and he’s playing in Miami in the MLS,” Beckham told the Smartless podcast.
