Liverpool and Tottenham Stars Face Potential Global Ban After Brawl
Núñez and Bentancur Could Miss the Start of the Premier League Season
Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez and Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur may face a global ban after their involvement in a violent altercation with fans. The incident occurred following Uruguay’s 1-0 Copa America semi-final loss to Colombia in North Carolina.
Núñez Leaps Into Stands to Defend Family
The shocking incident unfolded when Núñez jumped into the stands to protect his family from aggressive fans. The Liverpool forward who cost the club £64 million was seen exchanging punches with the Colombian supporters.
Security personnel tried to restrain him as he climbed a 15-foot wall to confront the attackers. At one point the striker even threatened to throw a chair at the hooligans.
Videos also showed Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur throwing a bottle into the crowd which hit a Uruguayan staff member. The chaos started after Uruguay players’ families were reportedly attacked by Colombian fans leading Darwin and his teammates to intervene.
Uruguay defender José María Giménez stated,
We had to step in to protect them. This is an embarrassment; there wasn’t one police officer to control them. Our families were in the stands with newborn babies.

FIFA Considering Global Ban
FIFA is now considering imposing a global ban on all players involved in the altercation. This could result in both Núñez and Bentancur missing the start of the Premier League season.
Such a ban would be a significant blow to both Liverpool and Tottenham which will potentially be affecting their early season performances.
After the brawl, Núñez was seen consoling his baby daughter on the pitch highlighting the personal stakes involved. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation with South America’s governing body (CONMEBOL) strongly denouncing the violence.
The Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte witnessed fans throwing drinks and causing disturbances which the police struggled to control. This chaotic scene has raised serious concerns about security and fan behavior at international sporting events.
Tottenham’s Eric Dier received a four-match ban and a £40,000 fine for confronting fans in the stands which was a similar incident. Núñez and Bentancur may face comparable sanctions for their actions.
The decision to ban these players for a significant time could impact the earlier matches for Liverpool and Tottenham as they kick-start their 2024/25 Premier League season on the 17th and 19th of August respectively.
