Croatia legend Domagoj Vida Retires from International Football
A 14-Year Journey Comes to an End for Domagoj Vida
Domagoj Vida who has been a cornerstone of Croatia’s defense for more than a decade has announced his retirement from international football. The 35-year-old defender made this decision after a remarkable 14-year career with the Croatian national team. This news was confirmed by the Croatian Football Federation on Sunday.
Vida made his international debut in May 2010 and has since played 105 matches for Croatia scoring 4 goals as well. His career highlights include playing in the 2018 World Cup final and helping his team secure third place in the 2022 World Cup.
Vida scored his first goal for the national team in the 65th minute of a friendly against South Korea on September 10, 2013, at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium in Jeonju.
On November 16, 2022, he made his 100th appearance for Croatia in a friendly against Saudi Arabia. He was an unused substitute in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 UEFA European Championship.
Croatia finished third in the World Cup, but was eliminated early in the European Championship 2024. He declared his international retirement following the Euro with his last cap coming in a pre-tournament friendly against North Macedonia.
Reflecting on his career, Vida shared,
“It is an honour to wear the most beautiful jersey in the world once in your career. And when you do it 105 times, you play in seven major competitions … then you can just be infinitely grateful for such a privilege.”

Vida has been known for his defensive skills and leadership on the field throughout his career. He has played for clubs like Bayer Leverkusen and Besiktas and currently plays for AEK Athens in Greece.
