Chelsea star on the verge of exile as Enzo Maresca hints toward his plans for next season
Premier League club Chelsea’s left-back Ben Chilwell had a difficult last season where he was able to just make 13 appearances for the Blues. His season was marked by hamstring injury concern. However, going forward his Chelsea career does appear to be in doldrums as new head coach Enzo Maresca didn’t seem to have him in his plans leading into the next season.
According to ‘The Mirror’, Enzo Maresca talked about his tactics and options available for him in the pre-season at the left-back and right-back positions. The Blues’ Gaffer reportedly asserted – “In these weeks, we try different situations (tactics – with inverting wing-backs). We try James (Reece James) inside. I watched his games (for Wigan Athletic) on loan against, I don’t remember now, he was playing as a midfielder. Malo (Malo Gusto) is trying to do that. Marc (Cucurella) can do that and Renato (Renato Veiga). We will try different situations.”
As it appeared, Maresca even forgot to mention Ben Chilwell in terms of the players he is looking up to. It may come as a big surprise to Chelsea fans, as Chilwell has been one of the senior players and pillar of the team in the last four years or so. Moreso, the report from ‘Mirror’ reflects that the Blues may well look to offload the England international this summer, considering by doing so, they could repudiate hefty wages of about £200K a week.
Is this the end of the road for Ben Chillwell at the Stamford Bridge? Well, this question may linger till the transfer window closes.
