Argentina football delivered glum news for Argentinian fans on Sunday as they announced the passing away of 1978 World Cup-winning Argentina boss Cesar Menotti.
What was Cesar Menotti’s death reason?
After a month-long battle against severe anemia and phlebitis surgery, World Cup-winning Argentina boss Cesar Menotti unfortunately passed away at the age of 85. The ex-Argentina manager was Argentina’s manager in the 1978 World Cup and led the nation to its first-ever World Cup victory. The 3-1 victory in the finals also happened to come on Argentinian soil against the Netherlands, further embossing his name into history books.
Speaking on World Cup-winning Argentina boss Cesar Menotti’s death, the president of the AFA took to X and said, “Dear Flaco, it is an immense pain to have to say goodbye to you. You left us a lot during your time in the national team and in football. Without a doubt, your passage to immortality will be with the best memories of all of us who love the round. I send a warm hug on behalf of myself and all of Argentine Football to all of Cesar’s family at this moment. See you always dear friend!”
The current Argentina president also paid his tribute to Cesar by saying, “RIP. Deep pain for the departure of the leader of a group that has given one of the greatest joys to the country. Although I adhere to another school, it would be foolish to deny the contribution of César Luis Menotti. Goodbye, Flaco.”
Several players like Argentina captain Leo Messi also paid their tributes to the World Cup-winning Argentina boss Cesar Menotti. Over the span of Menotti’s career, the gaffer also went on to manage high-profile clubs like FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid who also paid their tributes to the manager. He will most fondly be remembered by FC Barcelona fans as he led La Blaugrana to a Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup win between 1983 and 1984.
With the Copa America 2024 scheduled for June, the Argentina national team will certainly aim to pay tribute to the legendary manager by lifting the trophy in the U.S.A. under the captaincy of footballing legend Leo Messi.
