Benitez finally admits the truth about Steven Gerrard
Rafael Benitez has recently revealed a confession about Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard that he never dared to make during his time at Real Madrid.
The former Liverpool manager who guided the Reds to their unforgettable 2005 Champions League victory shared his thoughts on Gerrard’s impact and talent during a candid interview.
“The best player I’ve ever coached,” Says Benitez
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Benitez did not hold back in his praise for Gerrard, calling him the best player he has ever coached. “Stevie is the best player who I have ever coached,” Benitez admitted. “Of course, when I was in Madrid I couldn’t say that, but now I can!”
The Spaniard highlighted Gerrard’s incredible energy and versatility on the pitch noting that while the midfielder had an immense natural talent he lacked the tactical awareness that comes with experience in foreign leagues.
“He was so good, he had so much energy that he could get into the box, cover full-back, do whatever he wanted to do” Benitez added, “but he needed to understand the position.”

Gerrard’s Journey From Liverpool Icon to Manager
Gerrard’s legendary status at Liverpool was cemented with over 500 appearances and numerous trophies including that famous night in Istanbul (who can forget that anyway).
After hanging up his boots Gerrard was transitioned into management with stints at Rangers and Aston Villa and he is currently leading Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.
Meanwhile, Benitez continued his managerial career at top clubs like Real Madrid, Napoli, and Everton, leaving an indelible mark wherever he went.
