Bayern Munich join Arsenal in the race for promising La Liga midfielder
Bayern Munich have joined Arsenal in the race to acquire Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer. Both clubs are intensifying their search as they look to add to their midfield depth.
This is as per reports from German outlet BILD, which add that Barcelona are also monitoring the midfielder.
Zubimendi is a highly-talented and skilful player who came through the ranks at Real Sociedad’s youth academy. He was promoted to the senior team aged just 20 back in 2019 and has been a crucial part of the core group since.
The Spaniard has made 172 appearances for the club in this time, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in the process. He has developed into one of the most equipped players in his position in world football. Hence, it comes as no surprise that two midfield-dominant teams are in for his signature.
Martin Zubimendi is a midfielder who usually operates as the tempo-controller and chief playmaker of his team. He can create moves from deep-lying positions while also having the ability to play it long. At just 24, his understanding of the game and ability to read what could happen sets him apart from his peers. These qualities have led to Real Sociedad slapping a release clause in the region of €60 million.
Bayern have several quality players at their disposal but minor unrest within the squad has begun to creep in. Leon Goretzka is reportedly unhappy at being dropped by Tuchel in favor of Raphael Guerreiro in midfield. Now, the club are looking at external options altogether in Zubimendi. However, he could be the closest to replacing Phillip Lahm that the club have come.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have multiple players at their disposal, but most of them have poor fitness histories. Thomas Partey’s recurring injuries along with Kai Havertz’s inability to adjust to the left eight position means the club will have to dive into the market again. This is where Mikel Arteta believes Zubimendi would be the ideal coup.
Both Arsenal and Bayern will have to free up some funds to go all-in for this move in the summer. Considering their respective needs, this saga will be one to keep an eye on.
