What Happened to Hungary’s Barnabas Varga Against Scotland in EURO 2024?
Hungary snatched a 1-0 victory over Scotland to stay in the hunt for the round of 16 in the European Championships in Germany this summer. Kevin Csoboth scored a goal in the 10th minute of added time to knock Scotland out of the competition.
The goal came after a distressing event in the 69th minute of the match, where Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga suffered a serious head injury and was stretchered off the field.
Barnabas Varga Injury: Head Collision Against Scotland
In the 69th minute, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai whipped in a freekick which Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn attempted to punch away. But Barnabas Varga was caught in the face by Gunn’s arm and immediately fell to the ground, with players calling for immediate medical treatment.
He was understood to have been unconscious on the field and after a long delay was stretchered off the field by the medical staff. After a thorough VAR check, no penalty was awarded for the unfortunate incident.
The game was paused for seven long minutes as the Hungarian forward received medical attention with screens protecting him.
Since then, the Hungarian manager Marco Rossi revealed that Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone but was stable in a hospital in Stuttgart.
Rossi said: “What I heard from the players was that Barnay in that moment looked not conscious. Everybody was really worried about his condition and also worried about the fact the doctors arrived a little bit late, shall we say. They probably didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.”
“Fortunately now we can say Barnay is not under any kind of risk. He will probably be operated on in the following hours because he suffered a fracture. The most important thing is he is healthy. For sure, if we go through in this competition he will not be part of the team any more.”
