AUS vs ENG Pitch Report & Weather Conditions:

High-scoring venue

The pitch at the Gaddafi Stadium traditionally favors the batters with some even pace and bounce on offer making shot-making easy. Seamers do not tend to get a whole lot of lateral movement in the air while there might be some swing with the new ball for a while. For the spinners, it is generally better to bowl on during the daytime as compared to in the night under the lights.

Recent trends here have shown scores in excess of 300 frequently being posted by the team batting first. In the recently concluded tri-series, two matches were played at the Gaddafi Stadium and the average score was 298 across four innings with the 300-run mark being crossed in 3 out of 4 innings.

Dew Factor

Dew can play a significant role in the match with the second innings under lights being much easier to bat on. If the dew sets in post the evening, it could be a difficult task for the fielding side to grip the ball which would make batting easier.

Average 1st Innings Score

The average first innings score in the 74 ODI matches played so far at the National Stadium in Karachi is 253 However, that figure goes up significantly to 291 in the last five ODIs played at this venue with all five being in the past 18 months.

Australia: The team that has been most affected by injuries coming into this tournament have been the World Champions of this format, Australia. They have lost the services of their regular skipper Pat Cummins, pacer Josh Hazlewood, and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and if it wasn’t enough Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the tournament citing personal reasons and of course, there was the curious case of Marcus Stoinis announcing his ODI retirement days before he was picked in the team for this very tournament.

They are being led by Steve Smith now who has got a pretty depleted and inexperienced squad at his disposal and one which was thrashed by Sri Lanka 2-0 in the island nation just a week before the tournament began. Before that as well, they lost an ODI series at home against Pakistan in November 2024 with a few of their key personnel missing.

In a cut-throat tournament like this, there is no scope of an off day and even though Australia always finds a way in ICC tournaments it will be interesting to see how they work their way around this time. The experienced guys starting with skipper Smith, Head, Maxwell, and Zampa will have to show the way for them.

England: Having been butchered 3-0 by India in India less than 10 days ago, England’s situation is pretty similar as their Ashes rival, if not worse. Their white-ball form has been abysmal in the recent past with the 2019 World Cup Champions having lost 5 out of their last 6 matches in the ODI format with a 2-1 series loss in an away series to West Indies in November 2024 included. They have a new coach with Brendon McCullum taking over the white-ball reigns as well but it has been a poor start for his regime.

However, England have their full squad at their disposal and the batting-friendly conditions in Lahore is likely to suit their Bazball approach (or theory) much more than anywhere else. They have already announced their playing-11 two days prior to the game and have thrown the first punch at the Aussies. Jamie Smith has returned for them and will slot in at number along with donning the gloves.

AUS vs ENG Toss Prediction: Australia to win and bowl first

Even though there is not a clear advantage to the sides batting first/second as per the stats, either of the captain would want to chase a target on winning the toss as the contest is expected to be high-scoring and in addition to that the dew might play a role as well.

AUS vs ENG Score Prediction:

Scenario 1: England batting first

If England bats first, our prediction will be a score of around the 300-run mark.

Scenario 1: Australia batting first

If Australia gets a first go with the bat, they will score around 270-280 runs as per our prediction.

Australia vs England Players to perform prediction:

Australia

  1. Travis Head – The Australia opener is in the form of his life and he also loves playing against England. He has scored 894 runs in 18 matches at an average of 55.87 with a scintillating strike rate of 108.89 including an unbeaten 154*. He was also the player of the series in the 5-match ODI series between both these teams in Sep 2024 and his impact at the top of the innings will be crucial for Australia.
  2. Adam Zampa – The leg-spinner has 34 wickets at an average of 23.29 in just 16 matches against England which means that he is average more than 2 wickets per game against them. Leg-spinners have a history of troubling England batters and he will be a key figure in the Australian bowling line-up.
  3. Steve Smith – Captaincy always brings out the best out of Steve Smith and he will be raring to go. He could start off the tournament with a big one against one of his favorite rivals.

England

  1. Harry Brook – Brook was England’s best batter in the 5-match ODI series when these two teams last met. He was also the captain of England in that series and he scored 312 runs in 5 matches with a century and two fifties. He had a quiet white-ball tour of India just recently and he would be itching to prove a point. Also, he loves scoring runs in Pakistan.
  2. Ben Duckett – Closely following Brook was England’s second-best batter in the same series, Ben Duckett, who scored 305 runs in 5 matches including a century and two half-centuries. He should also enjoy the conditions in Lahore right at the top of the England batting order.
  3. Adil Rashid – Out of all the opposition he has played against, Adil Rashid has picked up the most number of wickets in the ODI format against Australia. He has got 50 wickets against the Kangaroos in 31 matches with a best of 4/41. He was England’s best bowler in the recent 3-match series against India picking up 7 wickets in the series and is in some great form. Also, he has Pakistani origins, remember.
