OFFICIAL: Aston Villa has completed the signing of ex-Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley
Former Chelsea and Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has made his move to Aston Villa on a permanent deal from Luton Town. The 30-year-old midfielder will be making his second stint as an Aston Villa player after spending the 2020/21 season on loan from Chelsea.
The England international has turned up 37 times for the Hatters last season, registering five goals and six assists in the process. He was unable to prevent Luton Town from being relegated to the Championship last season.
Barkley has penned a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee reported to be in the region of £5m.
How did Ross Barkley react to his transfer?
Ross Barkley will join an Aston Villa side that finished fourth in the Premier League last season and will play Champions League football this term. This will be their first European appearance since 1982-83.
The 30-year-old wants to break into the England first-team setup and play Champions League football.
“For me, and everyone else at the club and the fans, (the ambition) is to win a trophy,” he said.
“The club came so close last season and were unfortunate. With additions to the already great squad that we’ve got it’s going to be pivotal for the season. Hopefully we can win a trophy.
“Playing in the Champions League is a big incentive for me and the club, so I’m looking forward to that.
“I know plenty of staff and I know plenty of the players as well. I’m really close to John McGinn and I speak to him often, Ezri as well. I’m looking forward to getting back in.”
