Assessing Fulham’s striker options: Does Marco Silva really need to strengthen that area of the pitch?
Fulham have brought Ryan Sessegnon on a free to the Craven Cottage recently. On the other hand, they are still pushing for Emile Smith-Rowe and Scott McTominay, with the former looking more likely to join the club in the coming days. As far as major outgoings are concerned, Joao Palhinha secured a move to Bayern Munich earlier in the window.
Despite all these, the Cottagers haven’t been linked with any out-and-out striker in the ongoing summer transfer window. Rodrigo Muniz did step up big time in the last Premier League campaign, looking as deadly as possible in front of the goal for Marco Silva’s club, netting nine goals in his 26 appearances.
Alongside Muniz; Raul Jimenez did his best to support Fulham’s goal-scoring prowess as he caught a good run of form mid-season, netting four in five games, before getting sidelined due to a certain injury issue. The Mexican sensation was also on the score sheet in the Cottagers’ recent pre-season game against QPR.
However, Muniz continued his stellar run of form and made sure Fulham stayed clear of any relegation troubles and finished at a respectable position of 13th on the table. Chelsea loanee Amada Broja hardly got to play a few minutes under Marco Silva in a couple of games here and there.
On top of that, Raul Jimenez is already in the last year of his current contract with the club as the Cottagers gave him only a couple of years’ contract when they poached him from Wolves last year. With Muniz given the number nine shirt recently, it looks kind of hard for Jimenez to find himself in the mix of things. But, the Mexican needs to make sure that whatever opportunity he gets, he makes them count.
Football is a strange game, and Raul might become an important force for Marco Silva and Fulham in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, the Cottagers not signing a new striker in this window till now, further opens the door for Rodrigo Muniz and Jimenez to lead the position this season.
But, there’s still a lingering feeling among the Fulham fans that the club should bring in an option for the striker’s role if any injury troubles strike going ahead in the season.
