Alex Berenguer signs three-year contract at Athletic Club
Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Alex Berenguer has signed a three-year deal at the LaLiga club. The winger was linked with a move to AS Roma but is now set to stay in Spain.
Berenguer, who joined from Torino in October 2020, saw his contract expire at the end of the 2023/24 season. He was a free agent since July 1st after it was decided to part ways, but the Spanish side have now secured him for another three seasons.
The general director of football, Mikel González, commented on the renewal and said:
“Very satisfied with the renewal of Alex, which ensures we maintain our important offensive strength. His physical deployment and goalscoring ability are fundamental in a year with four competitions in which we are hopeful that he will continue to grow as a footballer, as he is in full maturity. We have managed to combine the player’s desire to continue making Athletic history with our desire to keep him and this is magnificent news.”
AS Roma were keen signing Berenguer with Corriere della Sera reporting that the winger was offered to the Serie A side as the backup for Stephan El Shaarawy. The winger has scored 28 goals and assisted 20 times in his 169 matches for the Spanish side.
