Alejandro Grimaldo Career
Club Career
2008: Alejandro Grimaldo was drawn to football from a very young age and joined Valencia’s academy as a seven-year-old. He always used to compete with older boys and earned the nickname “El Peque” for being the little one. It was at Valencia where he showed incredible energy while going forward and coming back to defend as well.
2011: Barcelona came calling for Grimaldo in 2008 and he jumped at the chance to join the famed La Masia. Grimaldo’s already sound technique was even more polished under the watchful eyes of the coaches at the academy. His explosive running and excellent crossing techniques were becoming a weapon to use.
Grimaldo thus became the youngest player to play in the Segunda Division at just 15 years and 349 years in 2011. The record stood for quite some time before being smashed by yet another La Masia product and the recent sensation Lamine Yamal.
2013: Alejandro Grimaldo was in line to become Jordi Alba’s successor at Barcelona. But an unfortunate injury changed everything. In an academy game, Grimaldo tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament. It was the most painful injury any athlete could suffer. It kept Grimaldo out of action for a year. Even though he made the comeback in 2014, there were question marks all over as he was just 18 at the time of the incident.
2016: The Comeback Trial from ACL injury was going smoothly as Grimaldo scored his first professional goal. However, with his contract expiring and the club deeming he wasn’t ready to replace Jordi Alba yet, a solution was to be found. Benfica came in with a low €1.5 million bid and it was enough to convince the Catalans.
Thus the 8-year adventure began in Lisbon with Benfica. Grimaldo did take some time to establish himself as a starter. He started to impress everyone with his crossing ability, set piece prowesses and the ability to score crucial goals after bombing forward.
He helped the club win 4 league titles during his stint with the club. Alejandro Grimaldo got a taste of the Champions League action as well. However as his contract was running out in 2023, he needed a new challenge.
2023: Alejandro Grimaldo joined the German club Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer. He believed he was ready to compete for bigger trophies and establish himself as one of the best left-backs in the world entering his prime. He did exactly just that in the Bundesliga.
Under Xabi Alonso, he found a role on the left side as a swashbuckling left wingback. He formed a dangerous duo with Jeremy Frimpong on the other side. Grimaldo used to bomb forward and put sumptuous deliveries on a plate for the forwards. He used to have multiple types of crosses in his locker room.
Grimaldo is a set-piece expert and scored his first goal for the club from a free-kick against Bayern Munich. He made key contributions offensively and was ever-present defensively. Grimaldo registered a season-high 13 assists in the league and scored 10 goals as Bayer Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga.
Alejandro Grimaldo was linked with a move away from them but he remained loyal to the club and is part of their title defence now.

The full-back was at Barcelona and it was easier for the national scouts to track his progress. However, the move to Benfica coupled with Jordi Alba’s renewed spell with the national team kept him out of the senior set-up.
Alejandro Grimaldo received his first senior call-up in 2023. He made his debut in the Euro qualifiers and assisted on his debut. He was part of the title-winning Spain squad at the Euro 2024. Grimaldo suffered a grievous Cruciate ligament tear in 2013 as a teenager. It ruled him out for a year and played a role in him not having a pro career at Barcelona. Apart from that he had hamstring and knee injuries here and there.
