Luke Shaw applauded for his remarkable display of sportsmanship after win over Switzerland

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw displayed a remarkable act of sportsmanship with his classy gesture after England’s win over Switzerland in the penalty shootout.

The defender did not play a single match in the Euro 2024 competition until the game against Switzerland where he made his first appearance since February and played for 42 minutes after being brought on as a second-half substitute.

After England won the nail-biting penalty shootout against Switzerland, Shaw immediately rushed to the dejected Swiss team to offer his condolences by shaking hands with every player on the pitch.

The emotional Swiss side broke down after their heart-breaking exit from the competition but Shaw was the only player from England who opted against celebrating and chose to shake hands with every Swiss player as he could.

Why was Luke Shaw out for most of the Euro 2024 competition?

The Manchester United left-back has not been in action since February 2024 after he injured his hamstring in a game against Luton Town which kept him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite his injury, Gareth Southgate still decided to take the former Southampton man to Germany who made his first competitive appearance against Switzerland on Saturday night.

In his absence, the England manager used right-footed right-back Kieran Trippier on the left flank in all the Euro 2024 games so far.
