Wrexham FC History
Wrexham was reportedly formed by the members of Wrexham Cricket Club and the club played in several friendlies initially. Winning several Welsh leagues and cups, the club entered the Birmingham & District League in 1905 and later joined the Third Division North in 1921 and went on to spend 37 years before being placed in the Third Division in 1958. The club went on to play in the Fourth, Third, and Second divisions during this time and was getting promotions and relegations consistently.
The 1990s saw the club getting financially poor and struggling to make an impact on the field. Chairman Alex Hamilton at that time tried to evict the club from its home stadium to sell it for his endeavours. After his removal from the club, Wrexham FC was placed into financial administration by the High Court in Manchester. The administrators reached an agreement with local car dealer Neville Dickens saving the club from getting expelled due to financial concerns.
Wrexham Supporters’ Trust ran the club after this scenario where former player-manager Dixie McNeil also joined the club as the board of directors. While things kept on getting worse for the club, it gained unexpected support in 2020 which has changed the club’s fortune since then. Canadian-American actor Ryan Reynolds and American actor Rob McElhenney purchased the club with their partnership company RR McReynolds LLC.
Since then, the club has seen worldwide success with its official docuseries Welcome to Wrexham showcasing how the club has evolved under its new owners. The team went on to win the 2022 National League, which was looking impossible for the side for 15 years. The 2024-25 season saw them playing in the EFL League One, which is the third tier of English football after 19 years. As they continue to win several unthinkable accolades, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney desire their club to perform in the Premier League someday.
Wrexham FC Owners
After Wrexham being the oldest club in Wales was fading away in the pandemic, Ryan Reynolds collaborated with Rob McElhenney to increase the side’s popularity and gain worldwide attention. With a reported figure of around $2 Million, the two actors tried to rebuild the historic side.
McElhenney supposedly watched Sunderland FC’s docuseries ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ which motivated him to purchase the club. After seeing the positive results for the Welsh side Wrexham, the duo also bought a stake in a Colombian soccer club LA Equidad, and also have a minority stake in Mexican soccer team Club Necaxa.
