Why is Gavi not playing for Spain in Euro 2024?
Barcelona midfielder Gavi missed out on the majority of the 2023/24 campaign with a horrific injury in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia back in November. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided Gavi wouldn’t be fit in time before the summer tournament in Germany and ruled him out.
The teenager endured a devastating setback back in November when after he suffered a complete tear of his anterior cruciate ligament which required immediate surgery. The incident occurred when Gavi took a hit on his right knee following a collision with Georgian defender Luka Lochoshvili.
Barcelona confirmed that the young midfielder has been ruled out of the 2023/24 campaign and wouldn’t be back until the next season.
Why was Gavi ruled out of Euro 2024?
After the teenager suffered a harrowing season-ending knee injury, Gavi was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign and the RFEF decided that the midfielder won’t be called up for international duty in Germany this summer.
Barcelona reportedly blamed Spain manager Luis de la Fuente for playing Gavi in the tie against Georgia as La Roja have already sealed their qualification three days earlier against Cyprus.
However, De la Fuente responded by saying: “I understand Barca’s complaints, but if it’s not Gavi it could have happened to someone else.
“This can happen in a La Liga match, in training or in any situation.
“Sometimes people don’t realise the risk that every moment entails from the moment you put on your boots. It was an accident, a misfortune, but Gavi was perfectly ready to play.”
The 19-year-old midfielder turned up 27 times for the national side scoring five goals in the process.
