Why did Nottingham Forest launch legal action against Gary Neville?
It has been two weeks since Nottingham Forest lost to Everton at Goodison Park. But things have turned unexpectedly into something broader than that. Forest are now considering taking legal action against Sky Sports for one of their pundits’ comment post-match.
After the loss, the club posted something controversial about the referee on their official X account, suggesting that one of the match officials was a Luton fan. Forest and Luton are now fighting for avoiding relegation with two games to go and the result at Goodison affected the plot.
“Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept,” Forest posted. “We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.”
What led to the legal action against Gary Neville?
The tweet attracted attention from Neville. The former England full-back, now working as pundit, accused that Forest acted like a child. Neville even said something related to a crime organisation deciding how the results are going in football.
“It’s like a mafia-gang statement,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “I mean, honestly, what the hell are they playing at? It’s like a petulant child, it’s embarrassing. And some of those things they’re saying in there, the suggestion of some sort of inferring of cheating because there’s an official in VAR in Stockley Park who’s a Luton fan is a scandal, and they will pay for that.”
Daily Mail learns that the Forest legal team are drafting a suing letter for Sky following Neville’s comment on their platform. The fiasco has taken its toll as Forest’s referee analyst Mark Clattenburg, stepping down from his position at the club.
