Who Will Be the Referee in Liverpool vs Newcastle United Carabao Cup Final?
Liverpool have a busy calendar for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. After the pre-quarterfinal of the Champions League, the Reds will shift their focus to the all-important Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United. The club from Merseyside are the favorite to win the Premier League and eyeing a possible treble.
The English Football League (EFL) recently announced the list of officials who will control the proceedings for the ultimate game. English referee John Brooks has been named as the main referee and will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Nick Greenhalgh. Interestingly, this will be the second match that John Brooks will officiate between Liverpool and Newcastle United having overseen a Premier League clash at St James’ Park in August 2023.
The last time Brooks took charge of this fixture, he sent off Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk with an early red card as Liverpool came out victorious. The Dutch defender received his marching orders for a last-ditch tackle on Alexander Isak and was also handed an additional ban for arguing with John Brooks.
Liverpool’s run in the Carabao Cup
The Reds are the most successful outfit in the EFL Cup having won 10 titles. Arne Slot’s side have been near perfect in the competition and are also the favorite heading into the final. They defeated West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion in the third and fourth rounds respectively before knocking out Southampton in the quarter-final. The Reds came back from behind against Tottenham Hotspur and booked a meeting with Newcastle United at Wembley.
