FPL Chips Explained: Everything To Know In Our Ultimate Guide
FPL or Fantasy Premier League is a football fantasy game based on the regular season of the English Premier League, where you have to pick your own squad which fulfills the criteria for creating your FPL team. After this, your selected team players score points based on the live and real performances of the players in the Premier League. Throughout the season, the managers of FPL also get to use unique boosters, also known as FPL chips which are one of the most interesting and strategic parts of the game. These FPL chips have a huge impact on your season-end rankings and your overall score so let’s get into it and learn more about these FPL chips.
What is an FPL chip?
FPL chips are boosters that help you strategically manage your team which in turn allows you to rank up. Multiple chips can be played in a season and there are different rules for each of those chips that must be followed.
What are the different types of Chips used in FPL?

FPL chips are very useful and if played correctly, they give an advantage over other fellow managers. Multiple chips can be played in a season, some can only be played once in a season, some can be played twice, and some for only a period. But one thing to remember is that you can only play/activate a single chip in a gameweek. This means that you can’t play 2 chips in the same gameweek.
The different chips that are available are as follows:
- Bench Boost
- Triple Captain
- Freehit
- Wildcard
- Assistant Manager

Bench Boost chip
Once you activate your Bench Boost chip, all your players, including those on the bench, score points in that gameweek. So basically all 15 players in your team score the points instead of just the players in your starting XI. This can only be played once in a season.
Freehit chip
Free Hit chip gives you the ability to change your whole team without any transfer cost for a single gameweek after which your team becomes the same in the following gameweek. So if you like your team but just for a single gameweek, you need to change your whole team but return to your old team for the rest of the season, you can use the Free Hit chip. It can also be used just once in a season.
Triple Captain chip
In the Triple Captain chip, your captain gives you 3x points instead of the usual double, or 2x points. So if your captain scores 10, then you will get 30 points in that Gameweek rather than the usual 20 points. Triple captain chip can also be played just once in a season.
Wildcard x2
Wildcard is probably one of the most important chips in FPL as it helps you build your squad. When you activate your Wildcard chip, you are allowed to make unlimited transfers to your team without any transfer cost and plan accordingly for future fixtures. Once you activate the Wildcard, it cannot be reverted back, and your team will be changed as per your choice. Wildcard can be played twice in a season, the first being until 29th December(GW19), and the other after the same date(from GW20 onwards).
Assistant Manager chip
Assistant Manager Chip gives you the power to choose a manager from the 20 available teams along with the 15 players that you have already selected. And the result of the club of your picked manager gets you extra points. Also, you get extra bonus points if the club gets a result against a team that is 5 or more places above them in the league table. This chip, once activated, stays active for 3 gameweeks and you cannot play any other chip during that period. Also, this chip is for one-time use only.
When is a good time to use a chip?
FPL chips can be played anytime during the season but of course, good planning and strategy are important to do well in FPL. For example, the first wildcard must be played before GW20, so it is always wise to use it when you need to change almost your whole team. Other chips are usually used in double gameweeks, blank gameweeks, etc. Assistant Manager chip can be used at a time when there’s a club that has a continuous run of good fixtures.
Number of times you can use each chip in FPL
It is very important to remember the rules regarding the chips and the number of times these chips can be played so that you don’t make unnecessary mistakes that hinder your strategy. Different chips can be used for different times such as:
- Wildcard – twice in a season, one until GW19 (sometimes 20) and one after GW20 onwards.
- Triple captain – only one time (one gameweek) in a season.
- Bench boost – only one gameweek in a season.
- Freehit – only one gameweek in a season.
- Assistant manager – only for one period in a season for three gameweeks. Once activated, it will remain activated for 3 continuous gameweeks.
