West Ham United vs SC Freiburg Preview, Prediction and Betting Tips

West Ham United vs SC Freiburg

West Ham United will host SC Freiburg in the second leg of the Europa League Round of 16 at London Stadium. The Hammers have to overturn the 0-1 trial deficit from the first leg against the German side to secure a spot in the quarterfinal.

West Ham are the only English side that Freiburg ever faced in European competition. Including the first leg encounter, both teams have played three times with The Hammers winning two of them. This will be Freiburg’s second visit to England after the group stage match, which is also the second loss they have suffered in the last nine away games in the European stage.

The London-based side’s best record in the Europa League was reaching the semifinal in 2022, losing to the eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt in the process. Meanwhile, for Breisgau-Brasilianer reaching the Round of 16 has been their best milestone in the competition. Having qualified for the spot for last year’s edition as well.

West Ham United vs SC Freiburg Team News and Predicted Lineups

West Ham United vs SC Freiburg Team News and Predicted Lineups

West Ham United

West Ham will have all of their players ready for the second leg except Michael Antonio who has been out since November due to injury. Another concern for The Hammers is Edson Alvres who collected two yellow cards throughout the competition. The Mexican midfielder is also the club’s most yellow card holder, collecting two.

With no significant injury concerns apart from Antonio, there would not be a huge rotation in David Moyes’s squad. Lukasz Fabianski is the main goalkeeper, with Aaron Creswell and Angelo Ogbona guarding the back line. James Ward-Prowse and Jarrod Bowen are also predicted to start the game with a mission of advancing to the next round.

Predicted XI: Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Creswell, Angelo Ogbona, Kurt Zouma, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, Lucas Paqueta, Tomas Soucek, Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen.

SC Freiburg

There are no additions on Freiburg’s injury lists as they have lost four players due to medical concerns. Kenneth Schmidt is still on a treatment to heal his abdominal muscle injury, Max Rosenfelder has been sidelined since January due to fitness. Another center-back Phillip Lienhart is also out for undergoing surgery for his groin.

Considering the urgency of being in the quarter-final for the first time, Freiburg are predicted to keep their winning team from the first leg. Including their in-form winger Vincent Grifo and Michael Gregoritsch.

Predicted XI: Noah Atubolu, Kiliann Sildillia, Matthias Ginter, Manuel Gulde, Christian Günter, Nicolas Höfler, Ritsu Doan, Michael Gregoritsch, Lucas Höler, Vincenzo Grifo, Roland Sallai.

West Ham vs Freiburg Prediction

West Ham vs Freiburg

David Moyes has brought consistency more than any other West Ham manager in the past decade. Reaching the semifinal of 2022 edition and winning the UEFA Conference League the season after is evidence that The Hammers should not be overlooked.

Playing home would be an advantage for West Ham to overturn the table. The last time both teams played at London Stadium, the host won two goals to nil. Something that would make West Ham proceed to the further round.
