Wayne Rooney comments on regretting the way he treated David Moyes
Over the years, few players have been as impressive and prolific as Wayne Rooney was with the former England striker thriving at the highest levels including at the Premier League. He is well known for his spell at Manchester United where Rooney is currently the club’s all-time top scorer with 253 strikes. Not only that, but the now 38-year-old is also known for his two spells at Everton where he did relatively well.
During his first spell, however, Rooney clashed with former boss David Moyes, who later joined Manchester United, eventually leaving for the Red Devils. That was despite the fact that Rooney made his debut under Moyes in 2002 before leaving two years later. The move didn’t go down well with Moyes and the Everton fans with both hitting out at Rooney after the fact.
Rooney explains why David Moyes sued him after he signed for United
The £30 million fee Manchester United paid was, at the time, a record fee but despite that, Rooney’s strained relationship with Moes continued. That eventually escalated when the former Everton boss sued the forward in 2008 over claims made in his autobiography. Now, Rooney admitted that he regrets what he said and did at the time as Moyes was very good for him at Everton.
The 38-year-old revealed that he did make up with the former West Ham boss after and even called him up to apologize for what he wrote in his book. Furthermore, Rooney added that Moyes forced him to improve, pushing him to do and become an even better player than he was at 16.
“David Moyes was really good for me at Everton. He sued me after I left the club—I hammered him when I left because of how I felt at the time. I regret that. I spoke to him a few years after I left, I called him up and apologized because the older you get, you realize why he was doing things. It was new to him to have a player getting all those headlines, for him to figure out,” Rooney told Gary Neville on the Overlap.
“He was a young manager at the time, it was new to him. When I look back, he was good for me, he was constantly on me. He was trying to not let me think that I was better than I was. I was a handful in my youth. In the indoor gym, I was launching rockets from one end to the other. Moysey walked in when I was just 16.”
