Villarreal vs Getafe Match Preview
Villarreal host Getafe at the El Madrigal in La Liga on Friday. The Yellow Submarine are looking to recover from back-to-back draws in the competition and return to winning ways. Since their sensational 5-3 victory over Barcelona on 27 January, the Castellon outfit drew 0-0 with Cadiz before a 1-1 stalemate with Alaves. With just 25 points from 24 games, Marcelino’s side are down in 13th position on the table, following what’s been a disappointing campaign.
Having finished in fifth place last season, Villarreal have seen a massive drop in form this time around. In fact, they’ve won just six times so far, with only seven teams registering fewer wins at this point in the division. Their biggest weakness this season has been the defence, conceding 46 times so far. For context, only Granada (48) and Almeria (51) have shipped in more at this stage in the division.
The club has also seen three managerial changes this season. Quique Setien, who led them to a fifth-place finish after Unai Emery’s departure, was given the sack in September. Pacheta replaced him but lasted just two months. Marcelino was next in line, taking over in mid-November, but has overseen just three wins in 11 games. Unless Villarreal’s form doesn’t see a drastic change that propels them within the top seven standings, he too could face the axe.
Meanwhile, Getafe haven’t really covered themselves in glory either, having accrued just eight points more than Villarreal to sit in 10th place. Los Azulones, though, are coming off the back of a thrilling 3-2 win over Celta Vigo in their last clash. Having led 2-0 at the break, the Madrid side relinquished their advantage late on, and the match headed for a draw. But in the 89th minute, just four minutes after Vigo had equalised, Jaime Mata, who’d scored in the first half too, popped up with a winner.
Getafe returned to winning ways for the first time in three games and managed to sustain themselves inside the top 10 places on the table.

The Yellow Submarine are nursing quite a few injuries right now, limiting Marcelino’s selection. Yeremy Pino has been out with a shoulder injury since November and isn’t expected to return before March. Alfonso Pedraza could also come back around the sametime, with the left-back currently recovering from an ankle sprain.
Ramon Terrats has a meniscus injury and will be sidelined from the clash too. Defenders Eric Bailly and Juan Foyth are both doubtful but will be assessed ahead of the clash.
