VAR decisions that have gone against Liverpool this season

After a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, Liverpool are flying high in the Premier League and are chasing a quadruple this season after securing the Carabao Cup earlier in February.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has committed four serious errors against Liverpool so far this season. Let’s take a look at the Liverpool VAR decisions that went wrongly against Jurgen Klopp’s men and lost them a vital three points in the title race.

1) vs Manchester City- Jeremy Doku challenge on Alexis Mac Allister

The Reds were denied a last-minute penalty when Jeremy Doku appeared to kick Alexis Mac Allister in the chest in an attempt to clear the ball from the corner. But the Belgian had a slight touch on the ball before landing his foot on Mac Allister’s chest. Referee Michael Oliver claims Doku challenged the ball in a reasonable position and did not award Liverpool a penalty.

2) vs Arsenal – Martin Odegaard Handball

Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield a few days before Christmas when Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard appeared to have lost his footing under pressure and made contact with the ball inside the penalty box. Jurgen Klopp was furious when the penalty was not awarded and lost his side two crucial points.

Even PGMOL chief Howard Webb admitted that Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty on that day.

3) vs Tottenham Hotspur – Luis Diaz’s wrongly disallowed goal

Liverpool were left perplexed when the match officials denied an opening goal in their eventual 2-1 defeat at Tottenham. Luis Diaz put the Reds in front in the 34th minute after he found the back of the net from a Mo Salah through-ball. Howard Webb spoke to Liverpool after the match and there was an official apology from PGMOL who admitted Diaz’s goal were incorrectly ruled out.

4) vs Chelsea – Nicolas Jackson handball on opening day

Liverpool were denied a clear penalty in the Premier League opener against Chelsea when Nicolas Jackson blocked a goalward-bound header by Luis Diaz with his hand. The decision was immediately viewed by the VAR for a brief period but referee Anthony Taylor wasn’t directed to overturn the decision.
