Chelsea Scouts Eyeing AZ Alkmaar Striker Vangelis Pavlidis as Winter Transfer Target
In preparation for the upcoming winter transfer window, Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for AZ Alkmaar striker Vangelis Pavlidis, with a scout from the Blues having recently observed the 25-year-old in action, according to Greek outlet Sport 24.
Despite significant summer acquisitions, including Nicolas Jackson, Deivid Washington, and the returning Christopher Nkunku, Chelsea are on the lookout for additional firepower, particularly with Victor Osimhen’s potential move appearing unlikely due to a new Napoli contract.
While Brentford’s Ivan Toney had been identified as a prime attacking target, stiff competition from Arsenal, who values Toney at £100 million, has prompted Chelsea to explore alternative options.
Chelsea to make a move for Vangelis Pavlidis soon?
The latest prospect, Pavlidis, emerged through the ranks of the Bochum and Borussia Dortmund academies in Germany before making a move to Dutch football. AZ Alkmaar secured his services in 2021 for a modest €2.5 million (£2.2 million).
Pavlidis has proven to be a fruitful investment for AZ, amassing an impressive record of 69 goals and 24 assists in 118 matches. The 6’1″ striker recently showcased his prowess in the 2022-23 Europa Conference League, scoring five goals to propel AZ to the semi-finals. In the Eredivisie, he is currently leading the Golden Boot race with 18 goals in 16 matches.

Despite interest from other clubs, including AC Milan’s unsuccessful €15 million (£13 million) bid in the summer, Chelsea is said to be contemplating a substantial offer, with AZ reportedly demanding at least €25 million (£21.7 million) for a potential January transfer. Pavlidis’s contract enters its final 18 months in January, adding pressure on AZ to consider a sale or risk losing him on a free transfer in 2025.
While as many as 20 scouts, including representatives from Fulham and Chelsea, observed AZ’s recent clash with PSV Eindhoven, the report suggests that Pavlidis is steadfast in not renewing his contract under any circumstances. Chelsea, aiming to rebound from a Christmas Eve defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, faces Crystal Palace on Wednesday in their upcoming Premier League fixture.
