How will USMNT replace Sergino Dest who’s set to miss Copa America 2024?
The Barcelona full-back isn’t quite replaceable for the USMNT squad who has suffered a serious knee injury in training with PSV. Sergino Dest has been rated as one of the most talented full-backs in the modern era even though he has been deemed surplus to requirements by La Liga giants Barcelona.
Dest has recently been struck with a knee injury in training at the weekend with PSV and might not be able to play until next year. It is not known when he will be available or how long will he be sidelined.
Who will replace Sergino Dest in the USMNT squad?
The defender joined PSV on loan at the start of this season after he failed to nail down a regular starting role at Barcelona over the past few years. Dest has started in all 25 of his league appearances in the Eredivisie.
His absence would be a huge loss for USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter as Dest have secured his spot in the national team since the 2022 World Cup qualifying stages. The Copa América kicks off on June 20 and some other players are expected to step up as the USMNT’s first-choice right back.
Joe Scally could be one of the starters who has cemented himself in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s defense in the German Bundesliga. He’s a more traditional full-back and doesn’t carry the same attacking instinct that Dest possesses in the same upfield.
What has been said about Sergino Dest’s injury?
The Athletic have reported that Dest’s knee injury is so serious that he might not be able to play until next year. As per the estimates, the USMNT full-back could be ruled out for nine months.
“Sergino Dest suffered an apparently serious knee injury during Saturday’s training. How long the full-back will be sidelined is still being investigated. It is almost certain that this concerns a longer period.”
