Turkey vs Portugal Player Ratings: Bernardo Silva dazzles as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Selecao reaches Euro 2024 Round of 16

Portugal coasted to a comfortable 3-0 win in their second Euro 2024 Group F game to book their place in the knockout stages of the tournament. Bernardo Silva put Selecao in the lead, finishing off a superb move from Roberto Martinez’s side. A bizarre own goal from Samet Akaydin gifted the Portuguese their second.

Cristiano Ronaldo unselfishly put the third on a plate for Bruno Fernandes, who couldn’t miss from five yards out. It was a job well done and the perfect response to a somewhat timid showing in a 2-1 win against the Czech Republic.

GOALKEEPER

Altay Bayindir – 4.5

The Manchester United goalkeeper came into Turkiye’s XI at the last minute, and his lack of experience was apparent. The mix-up that led to Samet Akaydin’s own goal can’t only be blamed on him, but it was a performance he’ll want to forget.

DEFENDERS

Zeki Celik – 4.5

The Turkish right-back struggled to deal with Rafael Leao’s pace, and he picked up a booking for his troubles. He was one of many of Turkiye’s defenders who were second-best throughout.

Samet Akaydin – 4

The Fenerbahce defender won’t want to see his own goal back and it will go down as one of the worst in European Championship finals history. He seemed nervy and indecisive throughout, with Portugal‘s attackers having a field day. He did make five interceptions, but an evening to forget.

Abdulkerim Bardakci – 5

He was constantly trying to put out fires but failed to deal with Selecao’s rampant frontline. Cristiano Ronaldo made him look foolish at one point with his trickery.

Ferdi Kadioglu – 4.5

The Fenerbahce left-back is highly coveted, with the likes of Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund taking a look. He’ll hope they didn’t watch him get beaten by Bernardo Silva more often than not tonight. He won seven of 10 ground duels but couldn’t deal with the tempo of the Manchester City attacker.

MIDFIELDERS

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6

The Inter Milan midfielder usually controls the game’s rhythm, but he couldn’t get himself on the ball because of a more defensive role he was tasked with. He was constantly running and trying to make things happen for the Turkish.

Kaan Ayhan – 5

The Galatasaray midfield man couldn’t influence the game in the middle of the park, and his lack of creativity led Turkiye to struggle to put together intricate moves on the counter. He lasted 58 minutes before Vincenzo Montella decided he’d seen enough.

Orkun Kokchu – 5

Quiet throughout and never really got a foothold in the game. His lack of influence was telling as Portugal dominated midfield and dealt with attacks with ease.

FORWARDS

Yunus Akgun – 6

Arda Guler’s absence was glaring, as was the lack of attacking intent on either flank. In the second half, he was replaced by the Real Madrid star. He was the best member of Turkiye’s frontline, constantly looking to make something happen, but those around him were lethargic.

Kerem Akturkoglu – 5

The Galatasaray attacker should have done better with an attempt early on and that was telling of his frustrating evening. He made one key pass but that squandered chance was a massive let down.

Baris Alper Yilmaz – 5

The Galatasaray frontman was isolated throughout, rarely threatening, and needed a partner up top of Arda Guler’s ilk. He didn’t catch the eye with not a single shot to his name.

SUBSTITUTES

Yusuf Yazici – 5

Kenan Yildiz – 5

Ismail Yuksek – 5.5

Arda Guler – N/A

Merih Demiral – N/A

Diogo Costa 6

The FC Porto goalkeeper was rarely tested by a toothless Turkiye attack, although he did his job when called upon. He made three saves and continuously helped push Selecao forward with his long ball attempts, often finding their man.

DEFENDERS

Joao Cancelo – 6

There was nothing too eye-catching from the Barcelona loanee, but a decent showing in a defense that didn’t let their opponents get a look in. He was somewhat off the pace in the second half, which saw Nelson Semedor replace him

Ruben Dias – 7

The Manchester City man next to Pepe put in a solid performance, and his agility helped when Turkiye looked to counter. He was superb in the air but outshone by his defensive partner on the night.

Pepe – 8

The 41-year-old continues to prove that age is just a number, as he was a rock for Portugal tonight with Turkiye struggling to find a way through. The FC Porto defender made seven clearances and two tackles.

Nuno Mendes – 7.5

A bright spark on the left with his pace and runs that often kept Turkiye napping. He was also astute defensively and sent in a few dangerous crosses.

MIDFIELDERS

Portugal midfielder Vitinha

Vitinha – 7

Not quite as spectacular as his outing in the 2-1 win against the Czech Republic, but he still did a fine job in the middle of the park. The PSG midfielder won four of five ground duels and is proving to be a vital member of Roberto Martinez’s side.

Joao Palhinha – 6

The Fulham midfielder’s presence wasn’t really felt, but it needn’t matter, given romped to victory. His usual relentlessness in the midfield was somewhat absent, but he didn’t put a foot wrong.

Bruno Fernandes – 7.5

The Manchester United playmaker is off the mark at Euro 2024 and has Cristiano Ronaldo to thank. He still put in an excellent all-round performance, driving his team forward with exquisite passes. He won six of nine ground duels and was a constant threat for Selecao.

FORWARDS

Bernardo Silva – 8.5 (Man of the Match)

The Manchester City man was on the scoresheet, and his overall game was neat and tidy. With his composure on the ball, he kept Portugal in control. He made three key passes, and there was nothing to fault him on, including his run into the box for the opener. His vision and footballing IQ were on display in a masterclass showing.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7.5

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner may not be off the mark in Germany yet, but he’s proving to be a decent outlet for Portugal. He unselfishly passed to Bruno Fernandes for his nation’s third of the evening. He had four shots and was even pulling off a trick or two.

Rafael Leao – 7

The AC Milan superstar was a livewire on the left flank and he connected with Nuno Mendes superbly during their time on the pitch together. It feels like he’s waiting to become Portugal’s go-to attacker but that will come with time.
