Mourinho shot to prominence during his time at Porto where he enjoyed unprecedented success. After an underwhelming playing career, Mourinho transitioned to management, firstly serving as a translator for legendary manager Bobson at Sporting CP. Mourinho travelled with the English gaffer at clubs like Porto and Barcelona while honing his tactical skills. His time at Barca was a defining moment as he broadened his horizons by working as an assistant to Louis van Gaal, coaching the reserves team and overseeing some of the first-team games.

He commenced his senior-team coaching career with Benfica followed by a spell at Uniao de Leiria before joining Porto in 2002. In his first season, he exceeded expectations by winning the Portuguese league title and the UEFA Cup, beating Celtic in the final. What unfolded in the following season was one of the watershed moments in Porto’s history. He inspired the Portuguese outfit to a shocking UEFA Champions League glory in 2003/04. After turning heads with his success at Porto in what was a burgeoning career, Mourinho moved to Chelsea in 2004. Little did everyone that he would change the landscape of the Premier League and help the Blues enter a new dawn. The Portuguese gaffer stamped his authority with the Londoners, winning back-to-back Premier League titles, ending the hegemony of Man Utd and Arsenal.

In a 4-3-3 formation, players like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Claudio Makelele, Michael Essien and Peter Cech flourished under Mourinho, becoming the best in the league. He returned for a second stint at Stamford Bridge in 2013 and won the Premier League title in 2014-15. Mourinho’s reign at Inter Milan is widely considered to be the Italian club’s best period in their history. Despite winning the Serie A in his debut season, Inter’s poor performances in the Champions League earned Mourinho more criticism, However, he proved his doubters wrong by winning an unprecedented treble in the 2009/10 season, including the UCL title. Mourinho’s transfer to Manchester United in 2016 turned the heads of many.
