He led the nation in both points and assists in his freshman year, also his standout performances made him one of the top prospects in the 2018 NBA Draft. He was initially drafted by the Dallas Mavericks but was traded to the Atlanta Hawks on draft night in exchange for Luka Dončić.

He set a milestone record on December 19 when Young tied (with three others) the then-NCAA single-game assists record with 22. He also recorded 26 points in a 105–68 win against the Northwestern State Demons.

After his freshman season, Young became the only player to ever lead the NCAA in both points and assists in a single season. After Oklahoma lost in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, Young declared for the NBA Draft in 2018. He was picked up by the Dallas Mavericks as 5th overall pick. However, on the same day, Young was traded to the Atlanta Hawks with a future first-round pick to get the third-overall pick, Luka Doncic. However, a bone bruise made him miss two games, and then the Milwaukee Bucks took advantage of it. In his fifth season with the Hawks, Young got Dejounte Murray in a trade that reduced the burden off Young’s shoulders. Last season, he made his 1,051st career three-pointer to surpass Mookie Blaylock for the most three-pointers made in Hawks franchise history on February 15.

In the current season, on January 14, he recorded a season-high 43 points while playing against the Phoenix Suns. However, for the past two games, his performance has not been up to the mark. Here are the stats that he has put up in the league according to ESPN stats:
