Tottenham vs Newcastle United Preview
- Tournament: Premier League
- Date: 4th January 2025
- Kickoff time: 12:30 PM GMT
- Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham are up against Newcastle United in their first match of 2025 and are aiming to avoid a league double loss to the Magpies. They have dropped all six points just two times in the last 15 years in the league.
Spurs are winless in their last three matches in the league and the pressure is mounting on Ange Postecoglou. They are sitting 11th in the league table with 24 points from 19 matches but can jump a place with a win on Saturday.
Newcastle United have the chance to break into the top 4 this weekend if they pick up a big win over Tottenham. A win by 5+ goals would see them jump above Chelsea and go just two points behind Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham have won two of their last three matches at home to Newcastle United, as many as they did in the previous five. This fixture has never seen a goalless draw – the most in 59 meetings in the top flight.
Tottenham Team News
Ange Postecoglou has a lot of injury issues and that will be a major concern for him. Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Wilson Odobert, and Destiny Udogie are ruled out this weekend. They are also without Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended after picking up his 5th yellow of the season.
The manager spoke about the injuries and said: “I think it is probably a combination of all of them. At the same time, there is also an individual thing involved there as well. I think it is a combination of all of those things. The amount of fixtures. The way we play. I guess the challenging bit for us is that quite a few of them have been reinjuries which we’re looking at. I think it’s a combination of all those things. I don’t think it’s unique to us. I think you’re seeing that across the board with a lot of club, it’s just that we’ve been hit a bit more extreme. Then you’ve had Vicario and with him it’s not a muscle injury but it’s long term and exacerbates the situation you’re in.”
Newcastle United Team News
Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Callum Wilson, and Nick Pope are ruled out for Eddie Howe’s side. They are also sweating on the fitness of Kieran Trippier, while Fabian Schar is suspended for the Magpies.
However, it is not all bad news as Sven Botman is back for them. Howe said on the defender, ““I always said Sven will be in and around the Christmas games. He has worked incredibly hard to get himself into a good condition, he has had three games, he is in and around my thoughts. I will have to make a decision on who best fits that position, but it is great to have Sven back around.”
