Tottenham vs Liverpool Preview
- Tournament: EFL Cup 2024-25 Semi-Final first leg
- Date: Wednesday, January 8, 2025
- Time: 3:00 pm GMT
- Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham will host Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash on Wednesday. It is a huge opportunity to move towards the first trophy of the season and both sides will be up for it.
Spurs have been going through an incredibly rough time in recent weeks. They have faced an unprecedented injury crisis which has also been coupled with a sickness bug. They have dropped a lot of points in the Premier League, which sees them in 12th place, 12 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have only lost one game this season in all competitions and sit atop the Premier League and UEFA Champions League tables. They are six points above second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand.
While Spurs haven’t won any trophy in 16 years, Liverpool are looking to defend the EFL Cup. Both sides will be keen to gain an advantage in the first leg.
Tottenham Team News
Tottenham are without Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Wilson Odobert, and Mikey Moore due to their respective injuries. Richarlison, Radu Dragusin and Fraser Forster are doubts for the clash. Meanwhile, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison are suspended.
Liverpool Team News
Liverpool, meanwhile, only have Joe Gomez out due to injury.

Key Players to watch in Tottenham vs Liverpool
Dominic Solanke
Tottenham spent a club-record £65 million to sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth last summer and he has done well to justify that price so far. He has been incredible in his overall play with pressing, link-up play and reading of the game. Moreover, he’s been doing this with no rest as the other attackers are out injured.
Solanke has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 26 games across competitions this season, including four goals in his last five games. He will be keen to add to his tally against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Diogo Jota
The Portuguese attacker has faced some injury issues this season but has been excellent for Liverpool whenever he’s played. He’s made 16 appearances across competitions, scoring six goals and providing two assists.
He suffered a hamstring injury earlier this season and has only featured off the bench in all seven games since returning. He is expected to start on Wednesday though and he will be keen to score and put himself in the running for the first-choice starting XI.
Tottenham vs Liverpool Prediction
Both sides have had a contrasting 2024-25 season so far. While Liverpool have done exceedingly well under Arne Slot, Tottenham have struggled under Ange Postecoglou. However, much of it has also been due to the circumstances and injury crisis for Spurs.
Tottenham have won just two of their last 11 games across competitions with five defeats and four draws. They are winless in their last four games with three defeats and four draws, including a 6-3 loss against Liverpool. They beat Manchester United 4-3 in the EFL Cup quarter-final.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last 24 games across competitions and have won four of their last five, drawing the other. They beat Southampton 2-1 in their EFL Cup quarter-final.
Liverpool are the massive favorites coming into the game and Tottenham’s injury crisis will not be ending before the clash. However, Spurs have shown some decent performances in recent weeks but have been unlucky with the results. Considering Liverpool might rotate some players, this could end in a draw.
Predicted Score: Tottenham 2-2 Liverpool
