Tottenham Summer Transfer Window 2024 Analysis: Strategies, needs, areas for improvement and financial capabilities
People who watch Tottenham expect just two things from the club. One attacking football, two a good pressing approach, and an entertaining game. The club has been a running joke amongst fans for their inability to win titles and it will be on Ange Postecoglou to break the hypothetical curse around the team.
Big Ange had a great start for Spurs last season as the manager helped the team get on a six-game unbeaten streak. Tottenham were just 3 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race after the first 10 games. However, injuries to James Madison and other key players hurt the team’s momentum as the season saw them fall out of the race for the Champions League qualification.
The team will be eager to turn things around this summer, but a lot will depend on their transfer strategies and what Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy have in store for the Lilywhites.
Transfer Strategy
On paper, Tottenham has a really balanced squad. The team has the perfect mix of players who can deliver when needed. However, injuries played a big part in the team’s downfall last season and the side could focus on working on their bench strength. Defense is unlikely to be an issue for Spurs with both Sergio Romero and Micky van de Ven great starting options. Radu Dragusin is a great backup, and it’s unlikely the team will spend on players they do not need.
The attacking third might need a slight change as Richarlison has been inconsistent as the number nine. While Ange Postecoglou tried using skipper Heung Son Min in the role, that is not his natural position and the team needs someone concrete to fill the spot.
Squad Needs and Areas for Improvement
Bench Strength
Tottenham’s bench needs some big-time improvement and the club will turn their eye on some smaller transactions to secure rotational players. While the defense looks sorted, the midfield and attacking options would go a long way with some additional reinforcement.
Attack
The attack is the biggest issue for Tottenham, as the team needs to put in the work. While the club has secured Timo Werner’s services in a long-term role, the club needs to bring in a proper number nine who can provide them with consistent goals in front of the box.
Potential Signings and Top Targets
While most of their squad looks complete with the arrivals of Timo Werner and Archie Gray, the team could still make a couple of signings in the remaining part of the transfer window.
Real Madrid Transfer Targets | Position | Current Club | Estimated Fee |
Jonathan David | Striker | Lille | €50m |
Vanderson | Defender | AS Monaco | €20m |
Tottenham is quite keen on securing the services of Jonathan David and has been in touch with French side Lille over his services. The striker has done a decent job impressing top sides in Ligue 1 and could be ready for a move to the top of top flights. Meanwhile, with the midfield somewhat sorted with Archie Gray’s arrival from Leeds, the team could focus on strengthening their defensive bench strength with AS Monaco’s Vanderson an ideal player for the team’s playstyle.
Tottenham’s Financial Capabilities
The Lilywhites always take a calculated approach when it comes to the transfer window and it won’t be anything different this time around. Daniel Levy has already shown he is a shrewd businessman and won’t be making any deal that doesn’t financially benefit the club. Spurs are well within the FFP guidelines as well, with the only not spending anything major this summer. The team also has seen some big wage earners depart and will look to comfortably wrap their business.
