Yves Bissouma faces backlash after social media blunder

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has issued a public apology after sharing a controversial video on social media leading to an internal investigation by the club.

The 27-year-old posted footage on Snapchat showing himself inhaling nitrous oxide also known as laughing gas,’ from a balloon while sitting in a limousine. The incident occurred after Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The video which quickly went viral has sparked outrage among fans and could lead to legal consequences.

Under recent UK law, nitrous oxide is classified as a Class C drug making possession illegal. Bissouma who joined Spurs from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 could face serious penalties if prosecuted including an unlimited fine or even jail time.

Tottenham Responds with Internal Investigation on Yves Bissouma

In response to the incident, Tottenham Hotspur has launched an internal investigation.

A club spokesperson stated that the situation “will be dealt with as an internal matter.” The club’s management led by Ange Postecoglou will now have to address this issue as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.

Bissouma, who played a key role under Postecoglou last season expressed deep regret over his actions. In a statement released on Sunday, he acknowledged his mistake, calling it a “severe lack of judgment.” He added,

“I understand how serious this is and the health risks involved. I take my responsibility as a footballer and role model very seriously.”

Tottenham’s Premier League campaign begins on August 19 with an away match against Leicester City. The club and its fans will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds as Bissouma faces the consequences of his actions both on and off the pitch.
