Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace Player Ratings: Werner breaks goal duck as Spurs come from behind to win

It was a nervy finish for Premier League high-flyers Tottenham Hotspur after a second-half comeback against fellow London side Crystal Palace to seal a 3-1 win. Goals from Timo Werner, Christian Romero, and Son Heung-min saw Spurs through despite Palace leading with 15 minutes left in the match. With Spurs in top form against Palace and extending their scoring spree to 37 matches in the Premier League, here is a look at the player ratings.

Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings

Guglielmo Vicario (6/10)

Guglielmo Vicario made a fantastic stop to keep Munoz at bay in the first half and was severely punished for his trouble in the stomach. He had little to do in the second half but divert Eze’s free-kick from the net.

Emerson Royal (6/10)

You’ve probably heard this before, but Emerson Royal stood his ground and let others carry out the attack.

Cristian Romero (8/10)

For Cristian Romero, there were several excellent defensive moments, but early in the second half, a poorly intercepted ball nearly gave Palace an opportunity. Then he nodded Maddison’s lobbed ball past Johnstone, flipping the game on its head.

Micky van de Ven (8/10)

Micky van de Ven made an important tackle on Mateta in the first half but seemed to hurt his left ankle. After a bit of worry, he carried on and was there to snuff out Palace attacks.

Destiny Udogie (6/10)

Destiny Udogie made plenty of runs down the left even if he was too hesitant with his passing at times.

Rodrigo Bentancur (5/10)

Rodrigo Bentancur made a significant tackle to set Werner up for an opportunity in the first half. Got a yellow card for taking down Eze in the build-up to his goal from the free kick but was Impressive at times, however in the second half, much chasing the game.

Yves Bissouma (7/10)

The Mali international performed much better, allowing virtually nothing to get past him in the middle of the pitch. He needs to be more of the motivating factor for the Spurs.

Dejan Kulusevski (6/10)

The Swede performed significantly better in the second half after a quiet first half. Soon after the half, he put Son up for a shot that went in. After that, the Swede took on a more significant role and assisted Spurs in resuming their offensive style.

James Maddison (7/10)

Although he is still not playing at his pre-injury level, he nevertheless managed to assist Romero in scoring with a lobbed pass into the box.

Timo Werner (8/10)

In the first half, Timo Werner did a good job of taking Son’s pass through into his stride, but the keeper saved his attempt to round off. But he made up for it by scoring Tottenham Hotspur’s first goal, heading in Johnson’s cross. Worked assiduously the entire time and earned his reward.

Son Heung-min (8/10)

Son Heung-min put Werner through again in the middle, setting up a huge first-half opportunity. Early in the second half, he took a first-time shot off Kulusevski’s pass and found the right-hand post. Subsequently, he ran through and buried his shot in the lower right corner, sealing the outcome.

Crystal Palace Player Rating

Sam Johnstone (6/10) 

Sam Johnstone made a number of outstanding saves prior to Palace’s late collapse. He was good at times and not to blame for their demise.

Joel Ward (4/10) 

Almost as if he was not aware that Romero was flying in, defeated way too easily for his purpose and looked off-colour once the Spurs were back in the match.

Joachim Andersen (3/10)

Joachim Andersen tried to dribble his way out of trouble against Johnson, but what was he thinking? In actuality, Palace lost the game as a result. Had he made a neat clearance the outcome of the game could have been different.

Chris Richards (5/10)

Chris Richards’ rate of recovery was advantageous until Son’s game-winning goal caught him dozing off, but by that time the game was already gone.

Daniel Munoz (5/10)

Daniel Munoz attempted to double up on Werner with Ward, but in the end, his attempts were in vain. The defence was all over the place in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Jefferson Lerma (5/10)

Jefferson Lerma was tasked with attempting to close Maddison down. His game picked up right before a pivotal error that gave Werner the equalizer.

Adam Wharton (7/10)

Adam Wharton was enormously calm and at ease in the center of the park. Very much at home in the Premier League, so, understandably, Palace struggled after his substitution.

Tyrick Mitchell (5/10) 

Tyrick Mitchell did not contribute enough on either side of the field. Still getting used to playing wing-back and was good for the first 60 minutes before the collapse began.

Jordan Ayew (6.5/10) 

Jordan Ayew ran the hard yards and was eventually carried off due to injury, but had he been given a fair chance and supported by others, he could have impacted the play.

Eberechi Eze (7/10) 

How fitting to make your comeback known as Eberechi Eze didn’t contribute much during open play, but he did lead one excellent counterattack and convert one excellent free kick.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (4/10) 

Jean-Philippe Mateta was devoured by the formidable team of Romero and Van de Ven and looked second best in the majority of the match against the Spurs center-back pairing.
