Tottenham Hijacks Barcelona Target to Secures Signing of Swedish Prodigy

In a surprising turn of events, 18-year-old Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall has opted to join Tottenham Hotspur in a €10 million (£9m/$11m) deal, rejecting strong interest from Barcelona.

The midfielder is set to undergo a medical examination on his 18th birthday in London this Friday, where he will finalize a five-year contract with the Premier League club.

Despite the agreement, Bergvall will finish the current season with Djurgarden, his current Swedish side, before officially linking up with Tottenham in the summer.

The competition for Bergvall’s signature was fierce, with Barcelona being one of the contenders. Djurgarden’s sporting director had confirmed talks with the Spanish giants in December.

After making his debut for Sweden in January, Bergvall met with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy, and coach Ange Postecoglou on Monday, followed by discussions with Barcelona officials in the Catalan city.

The transfer saga involving Lucas Bergvall took an unexpected turn as Juventus loanee Dejan Kulusevski played a pivotal role in convincing the Swedish midfielder to choose Tottenham over Barcelona.

Kulusevski, who is currently on loan at Spurs, shared insights about the club and spoke highly of working under coach Ange Postecoglou, contributing significantly to Bergvall’s decision.

Notably, Manchester United had also expressed interest in the highly-rated midfielder, who boasts 29 senior appearances and three goals for Djurgarden. His contributions played a pivotal role in the team’s fourth-place finish in the Allsvenskan during the 2022-23 season.

Looking ahead, Bergvall is expected to sign a long-term contract with Spurs before returning to Djurgarden for the upcoming Swedish season. Meanwhile, Tottenham aims to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League, seeking entry into the Champions League for the next season.
