Top Three Contenders for the Yashin Trophy 2024

The 2024 Ballon d’Or is just over a month away. The stage will be set at the Theatre du Chatelet in the beautiful city of Paris to host the prestigious football award show. France Football will honour the best players from the season with their coveted memorables.

Besides the question of who will get the Ballon d’Or, another big question is making rounds. The question is, who will get the best Goalkeeper’s award aka Yashin Trophy this time? Like in previous seasons, France Football has released the list of ten nominees for the prestigious award. But, only one will get it.

Of all the ten goalkeepers with fantastic seasons, among the ten best, only one goalie comes from outside Europe. He is Ronwen Williams from South Africa, playing for Mamelodi Sundowns. The list also includes the previous season’s winner, the Argentine former World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez.

On that note, after the interesting insights, let’s have a look at the top three contenders for Yashin Trophy 2024:

Top Three Contenders For Yashin Trophy 2024

Gianluigi Donnarumma

The 2021 winner of the trophy is a favorite again to win it. If the Italian wins it this time too, he will become the first player in the history of the Yashin Trophy to bag it twice. The 6-foot 5-inch goalie had a wonderful season.

In 42 games he played for French side Paris Saint Germain, Donnarumma had 16 clean sheets. He also played in every Euro 2024 and International Friendlies game for Italy and was often a saviour for the side.

Andriy Lunin

The 25-year-old has been contracted with Real Madrid since 2018. But, he was often loaned out and not chosen as a first-choice. But, things changed last season for the 1.91m goalie when Kepa suffered a blow and he was destined to replace him.

Lunin played one of the most important roles in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League triumph. From saving penalties in the group stage to making the most saves in the final (nine), Lunin was Real Madrid’s hero. It won’t be surprising if Lunin wins it this time.

Emiliano Martinez

The defending champion of the award is once again a favourite to bag this award. Dibu was Argentina’s men’s senior national team’s saviour again. Emi Martinez kept a clean sheet in every game of Copa America 2024, except the quarter-finals, where he was the protagonist again with shoot-out saves. His heroics earned his nation yet another honour, after the World Cup.

Emi’s performance in the English Premier League has also been commendable, where he kept nine clean sheets while registering multiple saves.
