Timothy Weah issues apology for reckless red card against Panama in Copa America
Timothy Weah was shown a red card for his inexcusable tackle in USMNT’s 2-1 loss to Panama in the second match of the Copa America campaign. His lack of composure led to his dismissal in the 18th minute of the game.
The first-half red card to Weah and an untimely injury to Matt Turner became costly for Gregg Berhalter’s side. The host nation were expected to secure their spot in the quarter-finals before their surprising 2-1 loss to Panama.
Why was Timothy Weah shown a red card?
The Juventus winger was shown a direct red card by the referee after he appeared to strike Panama defender Roderick Miller in the back of the head. Salvadoran referee Iván Barton wasted no time issuing Weah a yellow card after the incident.
After a quick VAR review, Barton replaced the yellow with a red card for the USMNT youngster as he stormed off the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. His unfortunate dismissal forced the USMNT squad to play with 10 men for the majority of the game.
A straight red card results in an automatic one-match ban for the player which means Timothy Weah will miss the final group game against Uruguay. It was Weah’s second red card of his career and his first with the national team.
Weah who has 40 caps and six goals for the USMNT can also be suspended for more than one game as CONMEBOL’s disciplinary unit can sanction a worse punishment.
