Thibaut Courtois reflects on competitive pre-season Clasico

Real Madrid gave a solid effort in the Clasico, believes Courtois

After Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the DirecTV Soccer Champions Tour, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois shared his thoughts on the game. Courtois said:

“We were quite competitive, we created chances and worked well.”

While disappointed with the loss, he acknowledged that the match was closely contested. He further added:

“It came down to small details. But it’s pre-season and we’re still working hard. A lot of guys also came on in the last 20 minutes and played very well.”

Courtois emphasized the importance of building up minutes and improving ahead of their next match against Atalanta.

Courtois praised young talents and spoke about his own form

Courtois also praised the young debutants who took part in the game, highlighting their hard work and quality. He mentioned:

“To make your Real Madrid debut at that age and in front of more than 80,000 people in a Clásico has to be special. They battled very hard and demonstrated their desire and quality.”

The Real Madrid goalkeeper specifically mentioned Jacobo, who impressed with his effort on the flank.

Reflecting on his own performance, Courtois expressed his satisfaction with his form, despite a small mistake leading to Barcelona’s second goal. The Madrid custodian said, “I feel fine with my goalkeeping and I’ve played well with my feet, which is what the coach and Llopis are asking me to do.”

Courtois also addressed the situation with fellow goalkeeper Lunin stating:

“Everyone has to choose what they think is best for them. He is a great goalkeeper and deserves the best.”

Looking ahead Courtois stressed that while pre-season results are important the focus remains on preparing for the regular season. He concluded by saying:

“We never like to lose against Barça, even if it’s pre-season, but when it counts it’s during the season.”
