The Curious Case of Dele Alli: Where Is He Now?
Alli’s career has gone off the rails
Dele Alli was once hailed as the rising star at Tottenham Hotspur. An attacking midfielder by trade, the former England international made a name for himself with his eye-catching performances for the side in the Premier League. Fast forward your calendar to 2024, and he’s nowhere to be seen today.
Now 28, Alli hasn’t played football for over a year now, despite still technically being an Everton player. His loan spell with Turkish side Besiktas was cut short in February 2023 when he picked up an injury, which proved to be the last straw for him as Alli’s disappointing run had already frustrated the club.
In a recent interview with Gary Neville on the YouTube channel ‘The Overlap’, Alli spilled the beans on his on and off-field issues, including a bombshell revelation about his sexual abuse as a child. He further opened up about turning to sleeping tablets to cope with his struggles, following which the player admitted himself to rehab, where he spent six months.
Alli also talked of his downfall at Spurs under Jose Mourinho, and then his failed move to Everton. The interview, which runs for over 45 minutes, gives an incredible insight into a player who was widely considered as England’s next big thing; someone who had the world at his feet, but now treads dangerously close to anonymity.
Alli still has the chance to resurrect his career
At 28, Dele Alli still has the chance to resurrect his career. Although a move to a big club seems improbable right now, but the former Tottenham star can choose to make a fresh start somewhere else, as his parent club Everton also seem unwilling to play him again. The player hasn’t fully recovered after undergoing groin surgery, and has now taken up punditry. He is set to join the Monday Night Football team on Sky Sports.
