2024 UEFA EURO Complete Guide: Teams, Groups, Format, Host Country, Venues, and Schedules

EURO 2024 is here, and the excitement in the air is tangible. 24 teams battle it out in Germany for the prestigious European trophy this summer.

The 17th edition of the EUROs is set to take place just three years after Italy lifted the trophy at Wembley. The shorter turnaround is due to the 2020 edition getting postponed by a year due to COVID restrictions.

This year, we have one team making their debut in the tournament – Georgia after they sealed their place via the Playoffs. Without further ado, here is all you need to know about the tournament:

Where and when will EURO 2024 be held?

Germany are hosting EURO 2024, and it is the first time they will do it since the unification. The tournament starts on June 14th (Friday), and the final will be held on July 14th (Sunday).

Who has qualified for UEFA EURO 2024?

Germany are the host nation and thus get an automatic qualification for the tournament. Apart from them, there are 23 other sides who have qualified for the final. They are:

Albania, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

Of the 23 sides, Poland, Ukraine, and Turkey needed the playoffs to make it to the final tournament.  They are divided into 8 groups:

How do these qualify for the knockout stage?

Teams will play every nation in their group once in the Group Stage. The top two sides will make it through to the Round of 16, while 4 of the best third-ranked sides will also progress.

The best third-placed sides in their respective groups will be ranked in order of the following criteria:

1) Points

2) Goal difference

3) Goals scored

4) Wins

5) Lower disciplinary points total

6) European Qualifiers overall ranking

7) If hosts Germany are involved in the comparison, drawing of lots.

What is the Prize Money for EURO 2024?

The maximum a team can win at EURO 2024 is €28.25 million. To earn this maximum amount, a team would need to:

  • Win all three of their group stage matches (€1 million for each game means a total of €3 million)
  • Win their Round of 16 match (€1.5 million)
  • Win their quarterfinal match (€2.5 million)
  • Win their semifinal match (€4 million)
  • Win the final match (€8 million)
  • Combine that with their participation fee (€9.25 million)
