Taiwo Awoniyi was born on August 12, 1997, in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, and is one of six children of Solomon Adewoye Awoniyi, who is a retired police officer, and Mary Motunrayo.

Taiwo married his longtime partner, Taiye Jesudun, in June 2018. The couple has two children: their first son Emmanuel, born on October 16, 2020, and a second child born on August 12, 2023.

Taiwo was not in any professional football academy and, like most of us, played on the streets. However, that is where he honed his ability as a youngster. In 2010, he was the best player at a Coca-Cola football competition in London, which led to him joining the Imperial Soccer Academy. Liverpool then noticed his potential and signed him in 2015. Initially sent out on loan to multiple clubs, Awoniyi has returned to the Premier League and proven his calibre. His loan spells included stays at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Mainz 05, and Union Berlin.

Awoniyi did not have a great season at Frankfurt in 2016, where he was mainly used as a substitute player. He then suffered relegation with them, after which he returned to Liverpool. He was immediately loaned out to Dutch club NEC, where he once again failed to get prominent playing time.

In 2017, Taiwo left NEC to join Belgian club Royal Excel Mouscron on a season-long loan. He made his debut against KSC Lokeren, scoring within 22 minutes. Taiwo then signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool in 2018 and joined Gent on a season-long loan.

He was then moved to Mainz 05 in 2019 on another season-long loan. However, he was unfortunately hospitalized in 2020 after sustaining a concussion during a loss to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga. Taiwo then joined Union Berlin in September 2020, which was the seventh loan of his career. This time however, he was signed on a permanent basis at the end of the loan.

Proving his worth in the Bundesliga, Taiwo earned a move back to the EPL in June 2022, when he was signed on a then club-record fee of £17 million. He has had a successful time at the club, and currently has 19 goals and 4 assists in 85 appearances, out of which only 40 have been starts.

Awoniyi has represented Nigeria’s national team at various levels, namely at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup and even for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The last time he represented Nigeria’s team was back in the 2021 African Cup Of Nations, in which his only goal came in a 3-1 group stage win against Sudan.
