Despite Iran’s initial favouritism, Syria national football team showcased remarkable resilience, pushing the higher-ranked team to the limits. Iran ranked second in Asia and 21st globally by FIFA, faced the determined Syrian squad positioned at 91st in the world and 13th in Asia.

The match unfolded as a pulsating contest, with Iran taking the lead through star forward Mehdi Taremi’s penalty in the 34th minute. Syria, however, fought back, earning a penalty that Omar Khribin converted, sending their fans into jubilation.

The game took a dramatic turn when Taremi received a red card in injury time, giving Syria a numerical advantage. Despite relentless attacks, Iran held their ground, credited to a “compact and disciplined performance” by Team Melli’s coach Amir Ghalenoei.

The deciding moment came in a penalty shootout, where Iran triumphed 5-3. Ehsan Hajsafi’s successful conversion sealed Syria’s fate, prompting disbelief among the Syrian players and their fans.

“Our team defied expectations to come this far and give Iran such a fight, so I’m heartbroken but I have a smile on my face because they made me feel proud of being Syrian.”

Mohammed Abdullah, another Syrian fan, acknowledged the challenges the team faced due to the ongoing war in the country.

“Football is loved by everyone in Syria, and this team is loved by all Syrians around the world,” said Abdullah.

As the Syrian team and their dedicated fans return home, their focus shifts to the 2026 World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, Iran prepares for a quarterfinal clash against Japan in a highly anticipated matchup on Saturday.
