Sven-Goran Eriksson got Liverpool wish fulfilled months before demise
Veteran legendary coach Sven-Goran Eriksson passed away on Monday, 26th August after having a tough battle with pancreatic cancer. Before his unfortunate demise at the age of 76, the Swedish manager who had over 20 accolades in his coaching career had expressed his long-time wish which wasn’t fulfilled for long, until just months before his death.
Days before his demise, he expressed in an Amazon documentary on his life that his wish of coaching Liverpool, the club he and his father supported never came to reality.
Sven-Goran Eriksson, his father were Liverpool fans
He told Sky News, “My father is still a Liverpool supporter and I am a Liverpool supporter too, always have been. He added, “So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool and that will not happen, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”
On getting to know the legend’s lifelong wish, LFC fans invited Eriksson to coach Liverpool’s Legends side in a charity game against Dutch side Ajax, months before he departed for the heavenly abode, in March 2024.
Eriksson, who was diagnosed with the life-taking disease in January, decided to accept the invitation. He joined the coaching staff with other legends Ian Rush, John Barnes, and John Aldridge for the game. When he walked out from the dugout, he received a warm reception with chants of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” making him emotional.
The game ended 4-2 in favour of Liverpool after the Reds started by trailing with two goals. The money raised from the program was donated to LFC Foundation education programmes and Forever Reds. Sven-Goran Eriksson also met Jurgen Klopp before the game.
Liverpool’s warm gesture for England’s first foreign manager to fulfill his wish will surely be remembered in good books.
