Spain 1-0 Italy Player Ratings: Confident Spain cruise past Italy

Spain needed to be at their best to beat Italy, and at the end of 90 minutes, they managed to secure all three points in the Group B clash. The high-profile match saw the Spanish side comfortably dominate their opponents and ease to a 1-0 win.

However, Spain needed an own goal to seal the win. Alvaro Morata’s flick-on into the six-yard box from a Marc Cucurella cross was pushed out by Donnarumma, but the ball was struck the knee of Calafiori, who was caught off-guard, leading to an own goal.

Unai Simón – 7: Needed to be active all the time, but was forced to make just one save in the game.

Defenders

Daniel Carvajal – 7.5: Hardly had anything significant to do in defense and was more involved in building up Spain’s attack, while also keeping possession.

Robin Le Normand – 7.5: Won half his ground duels and made a couple of clearances. However, he did not need to do much in defensive third, and was more engaged in passing to keep possession.

Aymeric Laporte – 7: Was not troubled by the Italian forwards and was again, just looking to keep the ball moving to retain possession.

Marc Cucurella – 8.5: Hardly put a foot wrong today and finished with 100% pass success. He won 8 of his 10 ground duels and lost just one of his aerial battles.

Midfielders

Pedri – 7: Had two golden opportunities to score in either half but was denied by the Italian goalkeeper in the first half, and then put his effort wide in the second half.

Rodri – 8: The anchor in the Spanish side that just kept the game ticking.

Fabián Ruiz – 8: Another solid display frorm Ruiz and came close to scoring once again.

Forwards

Lamine Yamal – 8: The teenager is worth the hype and he gets on the pitch to prove it in every single game. Took just one shot but it was just a whisker away from the post.

Álvaro Morata – 7.5: Kept knocking the door but just could not get a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Took four shots in the game, two of which were on target and one other blocked.

Nico Williams – 8: Could not get any of his two shots on target, but came very close to scoring on both occasions.

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 7.5: Was brilliant for Italy tonight and made six crucial saves to keep them in the game. However, he was beaten by his own players, and there was very little he could do about it.

Defenders

Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 7: Solid performance from the right-back as he did well against Nico Williams. However, he was beaten a couple of times – something he will look to correct in the next match.

Alessandro Bastoni – 7: Won all but one of his duels and was rock solid at the back never game Morata a moment’s peace, and was always available for the pass.

Riccardo Calafiori – 6: Scored an unfortunate own goal, but still capped off a solid performance overall. He was also ensuring that the Spanish forward did not get time on the ball.

Federico Dimarco – 6.5: Not as involved as his side needed him today and was chasing the ball more often than not.

Midfielders

Davide Frattesi – 6: Hooked off at halftime as he was just a spectator for most of the first 45. Managed just 13 touches and 5 passes as Spain controlled possession.

Jorginho – 6: He too was hooked off at halftime by the manager as Spain were able to ease past him. He was trying to get involved a lot, but was unable to influence the game.

Nicolò Barella – 7: The only Italian midfielder who had a decent match today. Barella was ready to receive the ball deep and also free around the ball to create chances. However, he failed to get a shot away in the game.

Forwards

Federico Chiesa – 6: Played just 65 minutes today as he was ineffective for Italy. Managed just one shot and six passes!

Gianluca Scamacca – 6: An isolated figure on the pitch as there was one Spanish player or the other shadowing him and keeping him away from action through the 65 minutes he played.

Lorenzo Pellegrini – 6.5: Played 80+ minutes but managed just one shot and that too was off target. Could have done a lot better but just not able to get involved in the final third.
